Story
At its
Annual Management Review, Lighting Components and Design, Inc. described
impressive progress and benefits of its taking a disciplined approach
to Continuous Process Improvement, reflecting impressive financial results,
improved costs, productivity and product quality.
"Our
disciplined proactive approach to Continuous Process Improvement yielded
outstanding results in 2001. It was a year during which LC&D improved
its margins, productivity, production facilities and product quality,"
said Ty Ramsey, the company's Vice President of Performance Excellence.
"We
made major, strides in each of our targeted objectives: Productivity,
Quality, Production facilities (capacity constraints) and Training."
"By
taking a proactive approach and being 'ahead of the curve' we were able
to achieve these quantifiable results:
- "2001's
Productivity is 24% better than 2000; with the outlook for 2002 being
for another 10 to 20% improvement.
- "Product
quality is 80% better as measured in PPM (defective parts per million)
continues to improve, whether measured in terms of internal rejection
rates or external rejection rates.
- "Two
independent third party audits of our business processes as part of
our QS9000 efforts were successfully concluded with no significant
problems identified.
- "Many
subtle improvements in processes were successfully independently developed
and implemented by cross functional LC&D teams as part of our
on-going Continuous Process Improvement efforts.
- "Scrap
& Rework is down by more than 50%.
- "Corrective
Actions, including process problems, are down more than 50%.
- "Customer
complaints dropped even further from their already low levels.
- "2001's
Gross Profit Margin is 2+% points better than 2000 due to improved
productivity and "across the board" cost controls.
- "Scored
100% for each of the last two years in customer "score card"
surveys of quality and customer delivery.
- "Improved
our formal training program and conducted 27 separate training classes.
- "Gave
"Supplier of the Year" awards to suppliers achieving 100%
on time delivery with 100% quality.
- "Critical
Suppliers were audited by surveys and other means to assure they meet
our rigid quality standards. Our "approved supplier" list
now includes just over 200 companies."
Ramsey
concluded: "In spite of the perilous economy and the tragic events
of September 11th, LC&D made significant progress in virtually all
key areas of manufacturing, service and quality. It has been a great
year for LC&D and 2002 will be even better!"
