Summary

Lighting Components and Design, Inc., Manufacturer of the Leecraft and Littelites Lines of Miniature Lights and Assemblies is keeping customers happy with the development of innovative products that are best in class as far as performance and cost.

Complete Story

LCD has recently purchased a custom designed automation system to assemble a new electric switch from Performance Automation, an engineering company that designs and assembles customized automation solutions, headquartered in Boca Raton, FL. As part of the automation, Performance Automation added a little color in the form of a bright yellow FANUC LR Mate 200iB robot. Best of all, LCD was able to pass along savings of approximately $500K annually to our customers.

Performance Automation manufactured this piece of equipment in four months, working side by side with the LCD Manufacturing and Engineering Teams to meet the tight deadline and the rigorous quality requirements of LCD’s customers. The automation system named “ASAM” utilizes the latest in computer and robotic technologies.

The FANUC LR Mate 200iB is one of FANUC Robotics’ latest-generation, electric servo-driven mini-robots. It is designed for precision machine load/unload, assembly, and lab testing applications. The robot’s small size, dexterity and high speed make it the perfect addition to The Switch automation. Steve B. from Performance Automation said, “This FANUC was perfect for this application; all of the cable routing is enclosed, the footprint was small enough and the wrist design allows the operation in a tight workspace. We could not have asked for a better robot design.”

Implementation of this automation system has allowed LC&D to meet and exceed their customers’ expectations for quality and on-time delivery. “Through the incorporation of innovative engineering concepts, product and process quality is validated at each of the automation’s stations,” per Ty Ramsey, Vice President - Performance Excellence, “All quality requirements are monitored through a vast array of proximity, pressure and optical sensors strategically integrated throughout the system. This has eliminated the need for costly, manual off-line testing of the product.”

Jon Cooper, President said, “This is the second automation project that Performance Automation has completed for LCD. We are very happy with the results and the customer is very happy with the cost savings that we have passed on to them.
